Carpentry and traditional boats in the sea of A Guarda

Boats are an extension of the people in the sea, a working tool, a symbol of life and community.
The construction and repair of traditional boats represents a guarantee of safeguarding the techniques of carpentry and the proper preservation of these vessels.
The material used in the construction of traditional boats is mainly wood and the main characteristic of these boats is their simplicity, adapted to the use and the environment, with little or no ornamentation.
The knowledge required to build a wooden boat is complex. It is necessary to know which trees are the most suitable for the different parts of the boat, at what time of the year to cut them and work the wood, how to design and place the pieces to sail….. This knowledge is passed down from generation to generation.
Currently, the Asociación Cultural de Embarcaciones Tradicionales O Piueiro is developing a valuable work of collection, recovery and maintenance of ancestral tools and marine knowledge. They have an extensive documentary and photographic archive on the maritime and fluvial heritage of A Guarda, which they disseminate through various exhibitions. They promote synergies with other entities in the Galician region of Baixo Miño and the Portuguese Alto Minho. In addition, in the summer of 2019, it hosted the XIV Meeting of Traditional Galician Boats.
One of the most visible and significant actions carried out by this association is the will to build replicas of the four traditional boats of A Guarda, in order of size, volanteiro, agulleiro, olleiro and gamela. For now, they have already launched the volanteiro, under the name of O Piueiro, made of red acacia, pine and oak wood, acquired thanks to the communities of A Guarda, Salcidos and Camposancos. They are currently in the process of building a gamela.
Carpintaría de ribeira e barcos tradicionais no mar da Guarda
Os barcos son unha extensión dos pobos no mar, unha ferramenta de traballo, un símbolo da vida e da comunidade.
A construción e reparación de barcos tradicionais representa unha garantía de salvagarda das técnicas de carpintaría de ribeira e da adecuada preservación destas embarcacións.
O material utilizado na construción de barcos tradicionais é fundamentalmente a madeira e a característica principal destas embarcacións é a súa sinxeleza, adaptada ao uso e ao ambiente, con pouca ou nula ornamentación.
Os coñecementos necesarios para construír un barco de madeira son complexos. É necesario saber cales son as árbores máis axeitadas para as distintas pezas do barco, en que época do ano cortalas e traballar a madeira, como deseñar e colocar as pezas para navegar…. Estes coñecementos son transmitidos de xeración en xeración.
Na actualidade, a Asociación Cultural de Embarcacións Tradicionais O Piueiro está a desenvolver un valioso traballo de recollida, recuperación e mantemento de apeiros e saberes mariñeiros ancestrais. Teñen un amplo arquivo documental e fotográfico sobre o patrimonio marítimo e fluvial da Guarda, que difunden a través da realización de diversas exposicións. Nutren sinerxías con outras entidades da bisbarra do Baixo Miño galego e do Alto Minho portugués. E, no verán do 2019, deron acollida ao XIV Encontro de Embarcacións Tradicionais de Galicia.
Unha das accións máis visíbeis e significativas levadas a cabo por esta asociación consiste na vontade de realizar a construción de réplicas das catro embarcacións tradicionais propias da Guarda, por orde de tamaño, o volanteiro, o agulleiro, o olleiro e a gamela. Polo de agora, xa botaron ao mar o volanteiro, baixo o nome de O Piueiro, feito de madeira de acacia vermella, piñeiro e carballo, adquiridos grazas ás comunidades de montes da Guarda, Salcidos e Camposancos. E, na actualidade, están en proceso de construción dunha gamela.
