Overview

A Cultural Taste of the Centuries-Old Gaelic Games Tradition in Historic County Down

Cultural Heritage | Tradition | Sport | Community | Local History | Stories | UNESCO | GAA Heroes

Every County throughout the island of Ireland is filled with history and stories indelibly linked to the ancient tradition of Gaelic Games. Gaelic sporting clubs instil a sense of local pride and identity where young players dream of one day holding the All-Ireland Winner’s trophy (The Sam Maguire in football – Liam McCarthy in hurling) representing their County.

Celebrate the history and stories of Down Gaelic Games in the company of 1991 and 1994 Down All Ireland Winners, DJ Kane and Ross Carr, football rivals, teammates and best of friends.  Learn how local man Maurice Hayes was instrumental in the transformation of Down County GAA and Gaelic football ultimately leading to Down taking the Sam Maguire All Ireland Winners Trophy across the border for the first time in 1960 and again in 1961.  At a local GAA pitch, DJ and Ross take you through your paces with some fun hands-on Gaelic skills training.  Get to grips with the fast-paced skills of soloing and hand passing, puck a hurl, strike a slither and experience the sheer joy and excitement of Gaelic Games.  Return to Denvir’s Coaching Inn for a relaxing evening of Irish hospitality. Leave with fond memories and an impressive set of Gaelic skills.
